Everton boss Frank Lampard 'will get involved' in attempting to convince Anthony Gordon to pen a new long-term contract at Goodison Park, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Lampard was appointed as the Toffees' chief in January and is keen to keep his prised asset on Merseyside after fighting off interest throughout the summer transfer window.

According to The Sun, Everton have opened contract talks with Gordon and are willing to increase his salary to £60,000-per-week.

The report suggests the winger, who is on international duty with the England under-21s, may have a release clause worth £75million inserted into any new agreement.

Gordon may still have just shy of three years remaining on his current deal, but his £10,000-per-week wages do not match up to his growing importance to Everton.

Chelsea were keen on acquiring the 21-year-old during the summer transfer window and were prepared to spend £60million to acquire his services, but they were unable to reach an agreement having lodged several bids, including a £40million opening gambit.

It is understood that Tottenham Hotspur also submitted a £100million offer which would have seen Gordon and Richarlison head to north London in June, only for Everton to reject the proposal.

Having stressed Gordon's importance and been keen to retain his services during the recently closed transfer window, Phillips believes Lampard will play a key role in attempting to persuade the wide-man to put pen-to-paper at Everton.

However, the journalist is expecting Chelsea to test the Toffees' resolve again as their interest is not going away.

When asked whether Gordon will agree fresh terms, Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: "It will be interesting to see what kind of decision he makes on that.

"Lampard will get involved again and try and convince him to stay. It will be a big decision for him to make because I think Chelsea will be back in."

Gordon has made a productive start to the season, having scored two goals in seven Premier League appearances.

He has become one of the first names on the team-sheet, but it is unlikely that would be the case at Chelsea, who spent more than £250million during the summer transfer window.

Although it is understood that Gordon wanted to make the move from Goodison Park to Stamford Bridge while numerous bids were fended off, the Toffees' academy graduate may be better off committing his long-term future to his current employers.
