Seth Rollins and Matt Riddle will be competing in a Fight Pit match at the upcoming WWE Extreme Rules 2022 Premium Live Event, but what exactly is a Fight Pit match?
There have only been Fight Pit matches taking place on NXT, with the first ever actually featuring Riddle back in May 2020 against Timothy Thatcher.
This will be the first time that the concept will be brought up to the main roster, and we’ll be explaining what the match type is all about in this article!

What are the rules for a WWE Fight Pit match?

The Fight Pit concept was originally introduced during the behind-closed-doors era of WWE back in 2020, and played off of the MMA and UFC history of Matt Riddle.
The Fight Pit structure sees the ring surrounded by cage match-like walls, and there is also a balcony/platform on top of the walls that the competitors can walk around on.
Other cage match types in WWE can see competitors win via escaping the cage or pinfall, but that is not the case here.
In keeping with the idea of this being an MMA-styled concept, competitors can only win via a knockout or submission.

Who is competing in the WWE Fight Pit match 2022?
Seth Rollins is one of WWE's biggest stars
Riddle’s original opponent in the match type, the aforementioned Timothy Thatcher, was also known as an MMA-influenced competitor, so the Fight Pit concept brought elements of cage fighting to the feud.
What is very interesting here is that Rollins is a completely different breed when it comes to sports entertainment, so bringing him into the Fight Pit cage could yield interesting results.
With the feud between the two men getting ever more personal on television, bringing in a cage match gimmick where there is no escape and both men can go hell for leather is certainly fitting.
