Newcastle United could welcome Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson back from injury when they face Fulham on Saturday afternoon, but Alexander Isak is a doubt, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Eddie Howe will have been hopeful of having all three available for selection ahead of the weekend but the international break has claimed another casualty at St James’ Park.

What is the latest fitness news from Newcastle?

According to The Telegraph, Isak is set to miss ‘several weeks’ of action after returning from international duty with Sweden with a lower leg injury.

The report adds that the problem is ‘not serious’ but will still take a number of weeks to recover from fully.

Howe’s striking problems have been made worse by the news that Chris Wood was forced off in New Zealand’s 2-0 defeat to Australia with a suspected rib injury.

After full-time, he added that, when challenging for the ball, something ‘popped’ in his ribs, leading to pain when running and breathing.

Guimaraes picked up a thigh injury before kicking a ball after joining up with Tite’s Brazil squad, with the £120,000 per-week star returning home for treatment.

Wilson, who was signed from Bournemouth for £20 million two years ago, has been out with a hamstring problem since the 3-3 draw with Manchester City, while Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey and Emil Krafth continue to battle their own issues too.

What has Jones said on injuries?

Jones understands that there is growing optimism at the club that Guimaraes and Wilson will be available for selection against Fulham.

However, it is a game that could well come too soon for club-record signing Isak.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think there's some optimism that Bruno will be okay. Isak, perhaps less so. Then there is Callum Wilson, I think, on the verge of coming back, I know that he's been touted as potentially being available for this one. So it might be the perfect timing, if Isak isn't around, that they've got Wilson to step back in.”

How will this news affect Newcastle?

Isak’s absence will be a real blow to the Magpies, with the Sweden international hitting two goals in his first three Premier League games.

However, having Wilson and Guimaraes at their disposal will be a definite boost and ensure that there remains quality in midfield and in attack.

Fulham sit sixth in the Premier League after a blistering start and Howe will want as strong a team as possible at his disposal on Saturday afternoon.
