The Rock was supposed to face Triple H at WWE WrestleMania 32, 'The Game' has revealed.

All signs were pointing towards the match happening, especially when The Rock and Ronda Rousey confronted HHH and Stephanie McMahon at WrestleMania 31.

However, despite WWE's best intentions and promo material being filmed to promote it, the match didn't end up happening.

Why didn't The Rock v Triple H happen?

It's common knowledge at this stage that WWE wanted The Rock to face Triple H at WrestleMania 32 in April 2016.

Speaking to SPORTbible, WWE's new Head of Creative explained that Dwayne Johnson actually approached him with the idea for their big match, via WrestleTalk.

A few years ago, we teased he and I wrestling one more time, and it was on that, he came to me and was like, ‘Hey dude, I got one more in me. I wanna do it with you. I want you and I to have that WrestleMania sort of moment, and let’s do it at WrestleMania.

'The Game' even explained on the new SPORTbible Stories podcast that they filmed promotional material for their match, but due to The Rock's schedule changing, the match wasn't able to happen.

We had done this video for it, and we’re ready to go, and somewhere along the time of that year, his movie career changed and he was like, ‘Ah man, I’m not gonna be able to do this. The timing doesn’t work out, and I can’t pass up this other opportunity. That's really where we were headed.

The Rock could return to WWE this year

The Rock could return to WWE this year

WWE had the idea over a year out, with the controversial decision to have Triple H beat Sting at WrestleMania 31 being put down to the fact that the match with The Rock was happening the year after.

The Rock was actually in action at WrestleMania 32, as was Triple H for that matter, just not against each other.

The Rock had an impromptu match with Erick Rowan at the show, which lasted just six seconds, while Triple H lost the WWE Championship in the show's main event to Roman Reigns.

Will The Rock come back to WWE this year?

Speaking of matches that WWE is/was hoping to book for The Rock at WrestleMania, the intention is to bring the Hollywood megastar in for a match at WrestleMania 39 in April 2023.

The plan, at least as of now, is for The Rock to challenge his cousin, the aforementioned Roman Reigns, for at least one of WWE's world titles.

The match is, according to the Wrestling Observer, 100% planned for the big show next year, but as always with anything involving The Rock, this can change as his movie schedule develops.
