PSG: Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting produced football's worst ever miss in 2019

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has embarked on one of the most unexpected career journeys of any male player over the past few years.

While, sure, Choupo-Moting has always been a solid finisher who chipped in with decent flurries of goals in German football, he never stood out as the type of player who would be lighting it up for some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

And that seemed especially unlikely when a miserable one-season stint at Stoke City that reaped just five Premier League goals culminated in relegation to the Championship.

Choupo-Moting’s remarkable career

However, in a transfer that turned more heads than we could possibly have counted, Choupo-Moting dodged the looming prospect of Rotherham United away with a stunning move to Paris Saint-Germain.

In the blink of an eye, the former Schalke striker went from playing with Charlie Adam, Saido Berahino and Joe Allen to lining up alongside Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Marco Verratti.

Now, as we all know, things became even more remarkable two years further down the line when Choupo-Moting maintained his place at the very top of European football with a Bayern Munich switch.

And while he continues to serve as a squad player for the Bavarians as we speak, we’re circling back to his time at the Parc des Princes for the purposes of today’s throwback.

Choupo-Moting vs Strasbourg in 2019

Why? Well, because although Choupo-Moting proved to be a very valuable back-up striker with a respectable nine goals across his two seasons in France, he did also make headlines for all the wrong reasons along the way.

For all the silencing of the haters that Choupo-Moting undoubtedly achieved in Ligue 1 – and don’t think for a second that we’re taking that away from him – he didn’t entirely dodge all the banter aimed in his direction courtesy of what must surely be the worst miss in football history.

Cast your minds back to April 2019 and the Parisians have bungled their chance to wrap up another French top-flight title courtesy of drawing 1-1 at home to Strasbourg.

Choupo-Moting’s worst miss in football history

Choupo-Moting had actually fired PSG into the lead on 13 minutes, but nevertheless fluffed what can only be described as a monumentally simple chance to bag a second before the break.

That’s because Choupo-Moting inexplicably managed to not only prevented a goal-bound effort by teammate Christopher Nkunku from finding the back of the net, but he also completely messed up his own attempt to secure the goal himself.

All in all, it made for a miss so mind-blowing, so unique and so extraordinary that goal-line technology actually had to be used to see if the ball had crossed the line because he was that close in.

But trust us when we say that no description of the howler could possibly do it any justice, so be sure to relive what surely endures as the worst miss that football has ever seen.

Three years on and it still doesn’t get any easier to explain – what an absolute clanger!

Fan reaction

Fans were baffled by Choupo-Moting's miss.
Fans tried to work out why Choupo-Moting missed.
Choupo-Moting's miss was an all-time shocker.
Choupo-Moting might never be topped.
Choupo-Moting's miss was even called an 'achievement'.

How did he manage that?!

Don’t get it twisted, it must have been harder than it looked for Choupo-Moting to coordinate his legs and steady his momentum in order to sweep the ball home, but even the most sympathetic and understanding of approaches to the miss doesn’t make it any less shocking.

And while a recent contender from the Canadian Premier League may have threatened Choupo-Moting’s claim to the worst miss in history, you can bet your bottom dollar that it remains amongst the dishonourable mentions at the very, very least.

Although it might be a footballing cliché to say in examples like this that ‘it was easier to score than miss,’ we’re not sure that it’s ever been more applicable than in Choupo-Moting’s case.
