Liverpool star Naby Keita is seeking assurances over his long-term role ahead of signing a new deal at Anfield and the uncertainty over the midfielder's future has led to several clubs 'monitoring' his situation, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Reds smashed their transfer record during the summer window, having spent £85million on Darwin Nunez, but boss Jurgen Klopp could now turn his attentions towards tying key players down to fresh contracts.

What's the latest news involving Keita?

Keita's £130,000-per-week deal is due to expire next summer and, with the possibility of being able to sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas suitors at the turn of the year, clubs are taking an interest.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Borussia Dortmund are among up to four clubs tracking the 27-year-old and are ready to pounce if he becomes a free agent.

The respected Italian journalist suggests Keita, a 46-cap Guinea international, is seeking assurances from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and his future will be decided in the coming months.

It is understood that the central midfielder is unhappy after talks over a contract extension broke down last month.

Keita's only appearance of the season came against Manchester City in the Community Shield, with a hamstring injury forcing him onto the sidelines.

What has Dean Jones said about Keita?

Jones believes Keita has entered a pivotal period and numerous clubs across the continent are keeping tabs on the internal negotiations at Liverpool.

The transfer insider feels the Guinean is willing to put pen-to-paper and commit his future to the Merseyside giants if Klopp assures him he has a long-term role at Anfield.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "It's a key time for Naby Keita and a lot hinges on how he feels within the Liverpool squad over the next few months.

"I’m told he’s open-minded about a new contract but needs to believe he has a long-term role. Clubs across Europe are monitoring this one in case he decides he wants a move in the new year."

Should Keita be handed a new contract by Liverpool?

Liverpool forked out £52.75million to sign Keita from German side RB Leipzig four years ago, but it has not been plain sailing at Anfield.

Although he has won seven trophies during his time with Klopp's charges, several injuries have hampered his progress.

Keita has missed more than 70 fixtures due to various issues and that will be a key reason for Liverpool wavering over putting a lucrative new contract on the table.

He may have made 117 appearances for the Reds, but they could benefit from attempting to cash-in during the January transfer window.
