"All of this would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, managers, clubs, coaches, team-mates and most importantly my ever-loyal fans. You supported me through my highs and lows, even on days that I did not live up to your expectations. I say a big thank you.

"I will also like to encourage everyone who I may have inspired one way or the other in the course of my career to never give up on their dreams, for every time you think about quitting, remind yourself why you started.

Mikel's moment of genius vs Spurs

Soon after Mikel's retirement post went live, a Chelsea-themed Twitter account decided to revisit one of his finest moments in the club's famous jersey.

During a match against fierce London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, the Nigerian icon left four opposition players chasing shadows with some slick movement and footwork.

It was an awesome display of both physicality and skill from Mikel, who has to be one of the most underrated players of the Premier League era.

Video: Mikel was too good for Spurs' midfield

What a player he was in his prime.

Chelsea could really do with a player like Mikel shielding their back-line in the present day, because Jorginho just isn't up to the task half the time.

Peak form Mikel and a fully fit N'Golo Kante as a midfield partnership? That right there is the stuff of dreams.
