Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes will want Jonjo Shelvey to return from injury as soon as possible, as the former Liverpool man allows the Brazilian to push forward and create, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Guimaraes made the move to St James’ Park for £40 million in January but has struggled to have an impact this season due to fitness problems in Eddie Howe’s squad.

What is the latest on Shelvey?

After suffering a hamstring injury during a pre-season friendly with Benfica, the 30-year-old is set to be sidelined until November, according to MailOnline.

The £70,000 per-week star had initially been optimistic that the problem was not serious but he was ultimately forced to return to the UK for surgery.

At the end of August, Howe provided an update on the progress of Shelvey, reporting that he was ‘pleased’ with his midfielder’s improvement.

The former Bournemouth boss added that Shelvey remained ‘absolutely determined’ to be back in action as soon as possible.

His absence has affected the Magpies more than many may have suspected, with Guimaraes now forced to take up a more defensive role in the middle of the park.

The eight-cap Brazil international is yet to provide a goal or an assist in five appearances this season after notching six contributions last term.

What has Downie said on the situation?

Downie believes that Guimaraes will want to see Shelvey return to action as soon as possible.

The Sky Sports reporter adds that having the experienced midfielder back in the fold will allow Guimaraes to be released into more attacking areas once again.

Downie told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Bruno would want Shelvey back and I actually think having Shelvey back in there would allow Bruno to push on and support the forwards and hopefully create a little bit more. So the longer this run goes on, the more you think Newcastle, right now, miss Jonjo Shelvey in that position.”

What other injury problems do Newcastle have?

The international break has not been kind to the Magpies this month.

Alexander Isak is set to miss several weeks after picking up a lower leg injury while on duty with Sweden and has flown back to Newcastle early to begin treatment.

Chris Wood has also suffered a setback, reporting that something in his ribs ‘popped’ while challenging for the ball in New Zealand’s defeat to Australia.

Guimaraes too was forced to return early from Brazil duty with a thigh problem while Allan Saint-Maximin and Emil Krafth continue to battle back from their own injuries.
