Aston Villa’s ambition as a club could be enough to tempt former Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino to Villa Park in the future, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Steven Gerrard was handed more than £60 million to bolster his squad in the summer transfer window but his future in the West Midlands is now in doubt.

What is the latest on Pochettino?

The Argentinian was sacked from his role at the Parc des Princes in July after 18 months in charge and was replaced by Christophe Galtier.

But the 50-year-old, who has previously been described as a ‘genius’, may not be out of work for long as, according to Football Insider, Villa have previously considered him as a replacement for Gerrard.

The same outlet have since reported that Pochettino would be ‘keen’ to step into the Villa Park dugout, with the ex-Tottenham boss attracted to the project and is not exclusively interested in managing a Champions League side.

Further speculation was sparked over his next role on Monday night when he was seen attending England’s Nations League clash with Germany at Wembley.

However, journalist Fabrizio Romano has since claimed that it is completely normal for out-of-work managers to attend games when out of work.

What has O’Rourke said on the situation?

O’Rourke believes that Villa’s ambition as a club could prove tempting to Pochettino if they were to make him an offer further down the line.

The journalist says they showed that characteristic when they appointed Gerrard in the first place and it is something for the Argentinian to ponder.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “They lured Gerrard away from Rangers in the first instance to show their ambition so there's no doubt that Villa are an ambitious club. That's something that definitely would come into Pochettino’s mind if he was to maybe move to Villa Park.”

Is Gerrard’s job at risk?

After Villa had been beaten by Arsenal at the start of September, Gerrard admitted that he had concerns for his role, having picked up just one win from their opening five matches.

But the club have started to see a small up-tick in form, first holding reigning champions Manchester City to a draw before beating Southampton.

Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece recently told GiveMeSport that Gerrard is not currently in danger of losing his job and retains the backing of the club’s owners.

However, it would be interesting to see if that stance were to change should Pochettino’s appointment become a genuine possibility at Villa Park.
