Tottenham: Conte now has 'big decision' over £272k-a-week duo at Hotspur Way

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has a “big decision to make” over resting the likes of Eric Dier and Harry Kane, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The £272,000 per-week pair have started every game in all competitions this season and saw their workload increased by turning out for England twice earlier last week.

What’s the latest news involving Dier and Kane?

It’s been a promising start to the campaign for both Dier and Kane, but they’re in danger of being overplayed in the months ahead.

That’s because the centre-back has been ever-present in the league and Europe this season, while Kane has played all-but 12 minutes in Spurs’ opening nine competitive fixtures.

Meanwhile, Dier now looks to have played himself in contention for not just a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad but potentially a starting spot after playing 90 minutes against both Italy and Germany.

Tottenham have a hectic schedule over the next month or so, which sees Conte’s side play no fewer than 13 times before the campaign pauses for the World Cup in mid-November.

Factoring in England’s progression in the tournament, the duo could have played around 30 games before the end of 2022.

What year did the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium open?

As a result, O’Rourke reckons that Conte might have to rest them to keep them injury-free.

What did O’Rourke say about Dier and Kane?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s got a big decision to make over the next few weeks with such a busy schedule and for all Premier League clubs, there’s so many games to fit in, the Premier League and the Champions League before the World Cup in November, so I’m sure these players will need a rest.

“You can’t keep playing them because it will only lead to injuries.”

Will Dier and Kane be rested?

Tottenham don’t have many options at the back, which means it’s going to be difficult for Conte to rest Dier at any stage.

There’s every chance he won’t feature in the Carabao Cup game with Nottingham Forest just before the World Cup, but he could easily start in all of the other Premier League and Champions League fixtures.

At the top end of the pitch, Richarlison’s arrival means Conte does have options and possibly the luxury of being able to put Kane on the bench.

But like Dier, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see the England captain picked from the off in every game besides the third-round cup tie at Forest.
