Leeds United ‘will look at’ goalkeeper Illan Meslier’s contract situation in the future, but there are no immediate concerns as things stand at Elland Road, according to Sky Sports reporter Tim Thornton.

The 22-year-old has been the club’s first-choice shot-stopper since making the move to West Yorkshire from FC Lorient back in the summer of 2019.

What is the latest on Meslier?

According to The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the young Frenchman to be compatriot Hugo Lloris’s long-term replacement in north London.

The current France captain is a big admirer of Meslier’s and praised him last year in an interview with RMC Sport, praising the performances and potential of Jesse Marsch’s number one.

This summer also saw Manchester United look at the possibility of signing Meslier from Leeds as a successor to David De Gea.

However, the Whites had no interest in negotiating with the club considering him ‘untouchable’, according to Fabrizio Romano, valuing him at £25 million.

In the summer of 2021, Leeds handed the France under-21 international a new long-term deal worth £22,000 per week, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2026.

Marcelo Bielsa has also previously piled praise on Meslier, describing him as a player with ‘a lot of personality’ who ‘transmits security’ with ‘decisive interventions’, while Jermaine Beckford has dubbed him 'incredible'.

What has Thornton said on the goalkeeper?

Thornton believes that Leeds will not be worrying about the future of Meslier as things stand.

However, as the seasons tick by, the Whites will likely consider offering the talented keeper new terms at Elland Road, according to the Sky Sports reporter.

Thornton told GIVEMESPORT: “I think for him, it's all positive because he's playing at a big club, developing, getting better and he’s certainly improved a lot. He's tied down to a deal so I don't think there's any reason for concern. Obviously, as time moves on, it's probably a situation that Leeds will look at.”

Would Meslier be a big loss for Leeds?

Having missed just three Premier League games for the club over the past three seasons, Meslier has become a hugely important figure at the club.

Statistics show that in his first season in the top-flight, he 177 shots on goal, a figure he bettered in the following campaign, keeping 215 attempts out as Leeds battled relegation.

Meslier has also completed 76% of his passes for Leeds over the last three seasons, showing the 6ft 4in star has become an integral part of how they play.

It would therefore leave a huge void if Meslier were to move on in the coming transfer windows, both from a defensive and an offensive standpoint.
