Lionel Messi: PSG star nets exquisite free-kick vs Nice

Lionel Messi in action for PSG

Lionel Messi scored an incredible free-kick for Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday evening.

The Argentine forward was in the starting lineup for his side’s Ligue 1 game against Nice at Parc des Princes.

And he opened the scori ngwith a wonderful goal from a set-piece.

In the 12th minute, PSG were given a free-kick some 30 yards out. Messi decided to have a go but his effort sailed just wide of the post.

He was given a chance to make amends 15 minutes later.

PSG were given a free-kick roughly 25 yards out when Dante felled Messi just outside the box.

It looked as if Neymar would take the free-kick but he stepped over the ball and allowed Messi to take centre stage.

The 35-year-old then dispatched his effort with aplomb as his glorious strike flew beyond Kasper Schmeichel and into the top corner.

Schmeichel was left rooted to the spot as Messi’s effort sailed into the back of the net.

It was fitting that the advertising boards changed from ‘AUTOHERO’ to ‘GOAT’ just as Messi made contact with the ball.

Messi is one of the best free-kick takers of all-time. He makes them look like penalties.

But, perhaps surprisingly, that was Messi’s first goal from a free-kick in a PSG shirt.

We dare say it won’t be the last.

Messi has now scored seven goals for PSG this season. He’s four goals away from matching his goal tally from last campaign.

Given the way Messi is going, he may well surpass his tally from last season by the end of October.

There were no further goals as PSG went into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead.

PSG were dominant in the opening 45 minutes but they had a disastrous start to the second half.

Gaëtan Laborde picked up the ball in all kinds of space at the back post and he made no mistake from close range and stunned the home fans.

Marseille went above the Parisian giants with a 3-0 victory over Angers on Friday evening.

PSG will go back to the summit of the Ligue 1 table with at least a drew against Nice.
