Liverpool's frustrating start to the 2022/23 season dragged on as they had to settle for a 3-3 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.Any hopes of returning from the international break with a bang were soon dashed as Leandro Trossard helped himself to two fantastic first-half strikes, leaving the Reds staring down the barrel of a rare home defeat. And while they did manage to turn things around via Roberto Firmino's brace and Adam Webster's own goal, there was another sting in the tail when Trossard bagged his third goal of the day in the final 10 minutes.

Trossard's treble vs Liverpool

It was, of course, an utter masterclass from the Belgian midfielder who has impressed for quite some time now, but it was nevertheless astonishing to see him go so far as racking up a hat-trick.

And if it felt like a rare occurrence as the scores were rolling in, then you'd be absolutely right because it's just the third time that an opposite player has scored a treble at Anfield in the Premier League era.

Now, we'd wager that you can name at least two of the three players to have left Liverpool's famous dwelling with the match ball, but we're not going to make things quite that easy.

Who's scored a Premier League hat-trick vs Liverpool?

That's because, unlike a lot of the reaction on social media, we're going to fan out the criteria to hat-tricks that Liverpool have conceded in the league since 1992 in general because the sample size is still remarkably small.

In fact, as far as we can count, only 11 players have managed the feat now that Trossard has joined the exclusive club and we're here to pose the question: how many of them can you name?

It's a tough question, but fear not, because we've got all the answers and you can check out the remarkable 11 of goalscorers who have smashed three goals past Liverpool in a single Premier League game down below:

1. Andy Cole - Newcastle United 3-0 Liverpool (1993/94)

The first player to notch a hat-trick against Liverpool in the modern era of England's top-flight, Cole was a man possessed in the Premier League's second ever season as he scored a dizzying 34 goals across 40 outings.

2. Matthew Le Tissier - Southampton 4-2 Liverpool (1993/94)

Speaking of superb 1993/94 seasons, Le Tissier was at the peak of his mercurial powers that year as he helped himself to 25 league goals, including a throuple of strikes - featuring two penalties - when Liverpool came to The Dell.

3. Peter Ndlovu - Liverpool 2-3 Coventry City (1994/95)

The first of just three players to have notched their hat-trick against Liverpool in front of the Kop, Zimbabwe international Ndlovu finished off silencing Anfield by scoring his third goal with a superb individual run.

4. Fabrizio Ravanelli - Middlesbrough 3-3 Liverpool (1996/97)

No list of Premier League 'one-season wonders' would be complete without Ravanelli who introduced himself to English football in sensational style by scoring an opening day hat-trick against Roy Evans' Reds.

5. Mark Viduka - Leeds United 4-3 Liverpool (2000/01)

One of the greatest Premier League games of all time was most famously punctuated by Viduka running riot and becoming the first ever Australian to notch a hat-trick in the division's history.

6. Kevin Lisbie - Charlton Athletic 3-2 Liverpool (2003/04)

The most obscure player on the list, Lisbie might only have scored 14 Premier League goals in his career, but three of them came in one afternoon's work with a one-on-one finish, poacher's goal and a fine solo effort past the Merseysiders.

7. Thierry Henry - Arsenal 4-2 Liverpool (2003/04)

You know the game, we know the game, your dog probably knows the game. Arsenal's 'Invincibles' bounced back from Champions League and FA Cup exits courtesy of an Henry masterclass that peaked with a stunning solo goal.

8. Andrei Arshavin - Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal (2008/09)

The only player on the list to score four goals, not just three; Arshavin's runaway goal spree on Merseyside made for one of the finest individual performances that the Premier League has ever seen.

9. Dimitar Berbatov - Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool (2010/11)

The only Red Devils player to make the cut, Berbatov scored a hat-trick of hat-tricks on his way to the Golden Boot in 2010/11, but this was arguably the finest of all with his second strike proving a spectacular bicycle kick.

10. Ollie Watkins - Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool (2020/21)

On a bonkers night of Premier League football that also saw Tottenham Hotspur win 6-1 at Old Trafford, Watkins proved that his £28-million transfer fee wasn't so silly after all by helping himself to a hat-trick against the champions.

11. Leandro Trossard - Liverpool 3-3 Brighton & Hove Albion (2022/23)

The reason we're here. Prior to this weekend, Trossard had never scored more than once in a Premier League game, so notching three in one go as only so few players have managed is quite the way to change that.

Brighton's Trossard celebrates.

How many could you name?

How many did you get: two, three, four... more?

While it's pretty easy to remember the more recent efforts from Berbatov, Arshavin, Watkins and - of course - Trossard, you clearly have some serious Premier League knowledge if you were recalling Lisbie and Ndlovu off the top of your head.

And with only three of the hat-tricks having taken place in the most recent two decades, it really underlines just how rare an occurrence like Trossard's masterclass really is against the Reds.

However, such is the gravity of Liverpool's underwhelming start that we shouldn't be too surprised that the threat of a player running riot at Anfield or when the Reds come to town looms larger than it has in a long, long time.
