Chelsea have ‘taken the biggest steps’ to sign RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku ahead of his other potential suitors, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The 24-year-old is one of the most in-demand stars in the European games at this moment in time, and it seems as though the Blues are in pole position to secure his signature.

What is the latest news involving Nkunku?

Last week, it was revealed by German outlet BILD that Nkunku had undergone a medical with Chelsea over the summer ahead of a potential move following the conclusion of the current campaign.

And David Ornstein of The Athletic has now provided an update on the France international’s situation, claiming that he has signed a pre-contract agreement with the west Londoners.

Ornstein states that Chelsea have committed to paying Leipzig a price in excess of Nkunku’s €60 million (£52.5m) release clause in an attempt to fend off the competition for his services.

The deal is not yet officially finalised for the immensely talented star to join Graham Potter’s charges, but it seems to be at an advanced stage at this moment in time.

What has Phillips said about Nkunku?

Following the news that Nkunku has already completed a medical, Phillips checked in with his sources who backed up those claims.

He told GiveMeSport: “So, when that came out this morning, I obviously checked in with Chelsea sources.

“And to add to the interest that's been there for next summer, they've told me that Chelsea have taken the biggest steps ahead of any other interested clubs at the moment to secure Nkunku for next summer.

“Other bits that have been reported today, it's all correct. I had it all confirmed this morning.”

How good is Nkunku?

Nkunku established himself as one of the most exciting and promising attackers in the Bundesliga last term, registering an incredible 35 goals and 20 assists in 52 appearances for Leipzig.

His outstanding exploits fired his side to their maiden DFB-Pokal crown, and despite their struggles this time around, Nkunku has continued to shine.

In 12 outings across all competitions, the diminutive gem has found the back of the net on eight occasions, setting up a solitary strike along the way.

Carrying that level of output over into the Premier League would be an extremely difficult task for Nkunku, yet there is no reason to suggest he doesn’t have the ability to shine in a Chelsea team under the guidance of Potter.
