Newcastle ‘hold an interest’ in £50m Champions League star at St James’ Park

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe

Newcastle United ‘hold an interest’ in signing Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk and are continuing to keep tabs on his situation at St James’ Park, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

The Magpies invested heavily in their first-team squad in the summer transfer window, splashing over £120 million on new recruits, but more money could soon be spent.

What is the latest on Mudryk?

According to i News, Newcastle are considering making a £50 million bid for the 21-year-old when the January transfer window opens, with the North East giants taking a serious interest in the star.

Mudryk has previously admitted that he would like to move to a Premier League club and added in a later interview that he would be unable to turn down an approach from Arsenal.

The Gunners attempted to sign the winger towards the end of the summer transfer window but could reignite their interest in January.

However, a report from The Sun suggests both English clubs could be out of luck, with Ligue 1 side Nice apparently in the strongest position to complete a deal.

This season has seen Mudryk find the back of the net twice, with both strikes coming in the Champions League, while he has added six assists across all competitions.

What has Jacobs said on the situation?

Jacobs understands that Newcastle are continuing to keep tabs on Mudryk despite the player attracting interest from across Europe.

The reporter told GIVEMESPORT: “You’ve got Arsenal and even Bayer Leverkusen [who are interested], but the challenge with Leverkusen is that they have been messed around before with Mudryk. They actually had a deal to sign him and it never came off. So are they going to return into the fold knowing that they’ve been messed around once before? But he’s hot property, and the better he does, the more clubs are going to be circling. But Newcastle certainly hold an interest and are keeping tabs on the situation.”

Do Newcastle need the winger?

Eddie Howe tried and failed to bolster his wide options in the summer, falling short in pursuits of Leeds star Jack Harrison and Leverkusen ace Moussa Diaby.

But the Newcastle boss still has the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron at his disposal, with the latter finding the net twice against Fulham on Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 victory.

However, prior to the meeting in west London, the North East giants had scored just eight goals in seven games, hinting at a lack of creativity in the final third.
