Lewis Hamilton believes there has been a failure from the new regulations in terms of them bringing the field closer together, with Red Bull dominating this season.

Formula 1 has often seen a dominant team emerge over the years around a new rule change, and that appears to have been the case once again this season around the latest new regulations.

Indeed, Red Bull and Max Verstappen have proven too strong to get near to on a regular enough basis this season, and so from the drama of 2021 we now have a bit of a cakewalk in 2022.

Max is quite likely to win the title this coming weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka after a dominant year and, though the new regulations seem to have helped in terms of cars following one another easier and being able to overtake, Hamilton feels as though another intention of bringing the pack closer together has not happened, with a clear pecking order emerging with Red Bull at the top.

"Yeah, they’re supposed to do that, but it’s not achieved what it was supposed to achieve, so yeah, we failed in that," said Hamilton.

“But when you fail once you try again and fail a second time and continue to try, so I hope more changes are made to try and bring all the teams closer and create better quality throughout the racing space.

“It’s my hope that we are all closer so we can have better racing and more overtaking. Red Bull have walked away with it this year. They have done a great job.”

Everyone wants to see the world championship going down to the final race every year but that is not what always happens in F1 and sometimes you have to doff your cap, as Hamilton has, to those that have done a brilliant job.

He and his Mercedes team have been beneficiaries in the past of rule changes and the hope he'll have is that Red Bull and Verstappen aren't going to replicate the Silver Arrows' years of dominance.

Certainly, there has to be a hope that more tweaks will be made where possible to try and bring the pack closer together and allow other teams a chance at glory.
