We’ve been given a sneak peek at the features that will be included, and that extends to an explanation of how the UEFA licencing is going to work.

SI pulled up plenty of trees when they announced that they had secured official licencing rights to the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League.

Let’s take a look at how it’s going to work in the game.

How Will UEFA Licencing Work in FM23?

The SI team have made it clear that they are keen to make proper use of the licence, and that means we’re going to get some huge upgrades to the way the UEFA competitions work.

There are going to be several new features that make playing in Europe feel special. They are as follows.

  • Matchday Authenticity – There will be official branding for line-ups and scoreboards in the game for all of the UEFA tournaments.
  • Goals, Cards, and Substitution Icons will all reflect UEFA branding too.
  • Official match balls from the tournaments will be in the game.
  • The official music will also be included in a dynamic cutscene that will see the teams emerging from the tunnel.
  • The tournament finals will feature bespoke podiums and trophy lifts if you manage to win one of the UEFA competitions.

SI has also explained that they have made real upgrades to cup draws as well, meaning that players will be encouraged to look forward to seeing their name come out of the hat.

The following improvements have been made.

  • Cup draws will now be full-screen experiences.
  • Before a draw, your fans will be polled to see exactly who they want to play.
  • Going into the draw, the screen will also have a live social feed that will react to the draw as it happens.
  • Draws will have a host, who will explain why some teams cannot be paired with another team, and you’ll also have an overview tab that you can watch, keeping you across all potential draws.
  • Matchup previews are also included, giving you history on potential meetings, especially if you’ve already been in the Champions League in previous seasons.
  • SI have included the option to move on at your own pace and potentially skip it altogether if you want.

And it should be added that SI is aware of the upcoming change to the Champions League that will see it adopt a league-style format from 2024/25.

They have confirmed on their website that they are mindful of this and have made it so that cup draws and inbox items will change to reflect this.
