Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi does not need to leave Selhurst Park to gain more recognition, says journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The 22-year-old, who was linked to Tottenham during the summer, was called up to the England squad during the recent international break but did not play a single minute. However, O'Rourke does not think he needs to move to a club like Spurs to win over Gareth Southgate.

What was said about Guehi in the summer?

In a Q&A session, football.london's Alasdair Gold claimed that Guehi was one centre-back who Tottenham were considering.

The Englishman only joined Palace in 2021, but he was fantastic during his debut campaign at Selhurst Park, making it no surprise that he attracted interest in the last transfer window.

Guehi, who signed for Patrick Vieira's side from Chelsea in an £18m deal (via The Guardian), missed just two Premier League games.

On average, he made 3.5 clearances per top-flight match in the 2021/22 campaign (via WhoScored), a number only Joachim Andersen (3.6) bettered in Palace's squad.

What has O'Rourke said about Guehi and Palace?

O'Rourke says there is no big-club bias when it comes to Southgate's England selection. Considering that, the journalist does not think Guehi needs to depart Palace to boost his chances of becoming a Three Lions regular.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "It's an interesting dilemma I suppose. Marc Guehi was named in the squad but didn't play. He wasn't the only player; there were other players in similar boats who obviously are at big clubs and didn't get much of a look-in, so I don't think right now he has to think about possibly leaving Crystal Palace for a bigger club.

"I think Gareth Southgate has shown that he will pick players regardless of what club they're at."

Should Guehi leave Palace?

There is no rush. Guehi is still just 22 years of age, so it is not like he is running out of time to get a move to a Champions League club.

At Palace, he is also playing regularly. That is undoubtedly the reason why he left Chelsea over a year ago, to get minutes on the pitch.

Ultimately, remaining at Palace was probably best for Guehi's development. Described as "incredible" by BBC Sport's Alex Howell, if he keeps this form up, then it is hard to imagine him not getting a big move later down the line. For now, though, Palace looks like a great home for Guehi.
