Alessia Russo says people are still talking about her iconic back-heel finish against Sweden at Euro 2022. The 23-year-old was a key part of the England squad that achieved history on home soil and her memorable goal in the semi-final will be watched on repeat for years to come.

How good was Russo’s goal?

With England leading 2-0, the striker picked up the ball in the box, while facing away from the goal.

Initially, it appeared near impossible for Russo to score, but the Man United star had other ideas.

A sumptuous back-heel from the striker saw the ball go through the Swedish keeper’s legs and sent the Bramall Lane crowd into raptures.

The goal was deservedly voted the best goal of the tournament, ahead of Alexandra Popp’s second goal for Germany in their semi-final vs France.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Russo admitted she may never score another goal quite as good as the one against Sweden.

"I still get it now. I'm not sure I'll ever score a goal like that again.

"It was great I got to do it on that kind of stage. It was special and people are still talking about it, which is nice.”

Who is Alessia Russo?

Russo is a forward, who plays for Man United and England.

Born in Kent, she is of Italian descent, with her Sicilian grandfather moving to England in the 1950s.

Her father, Mario, played non-league football for the Metropolitan Police, while her brother also played for multiple semi-professional teams.

In 2017, she moved to the United States to play college soccer for the North Carolina Tar Heels, alongside Arsenal star Lotte Wubben-Moy.

Three years later, Russo signed with Man United on a two-year contract, having grown up supporting the Red Devils.

Despite making just six appearances for the Lionesses prior to the Euros, she is now a European champion and a national hero.

Discussing the growth of the game since England’s victory, Russo told BBC: "Things have definitely changed. The growth of the game in the past few months has been incredible. We want it to keep going now.

"If that means we get recognised more - as long as the women's game keeps growing - then that's part of the job."

Russo withdraws from England squad

Following Ellen White’s retirement, Russo appeared to be in line for a start against the USA on Friday but has withdrawn from the squad with a small injury.

No replacement has been called up as of now.

Will Russo stay at Man United?

It is understood that Russo turned down a new United contract in the summer and her current deal is set to expire at the end of this season.

United have a strong chance of challenging for Champions League qualification this year, but as England’s new star striker, Russo may have already set her sights elsewhere.
