Wolverhampton Wanderers are among a number of clubs who have been monitoring Ruben Amorim and the Sporting boss is an 'obvious' candidate to replace the sacked Bruno Lage in the Molineux dugout, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Lage was axed by the Wolves hierarchy on Sunday, less than 24 hours after a 2-0 defeat to West Ham United.

What's the latest news involving Amorim?

Following Lage's dismissal from Molineux, it quickly emerged that the Wolves board had set their sights on appointing Amorim as his successor.

However, it appears that chairman Jeff Shi will have a tough job convincing the Sporting chief, who has already won silverware on five occasions during the early stages of his managerial career, to move to the West Midlands.

That is because, according to The Sun, Amorim has no intention to quit his current employers and he does not want to give up Champions League football for a potential relegation battle in the Premier League.

The report suggests the 37-year-old, who has been at the Sporting helm since March 2020, has a buyout clause worth upwards of £20million written into his contract and the fact he employs a rival agent to Jorge Mendes could also prove to be a major obstacle to overcome.

Amorim has already enjoyed success against a Premier League side this season, having led the Lisbon giants to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League group stage.

What has Dean Jones said about Amorim?

Jones believes Amorim is a candidate for the Wolves job and he would be an exciting appointment following Lage's exit.

However, the journalist warns that it will be difficult to get the Portuguese through the door due to sides across the continent looking to acquire his services.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "Amorim is an obvious one. We've all seen the rise in his profile in quite a short amount of time.

"We know that he's admired by clubs across Europe and people have tracked him closely considering when their manager spot might need to be filled."

Why was Lage sacked by Wolves?

Wolves have dropped into the Premier League's relegation zone following a poor run of form which has seen them only clinch one domestic win since the campaign got underway.

In fact, Lage led Wanderers to just a single victory in his final 15 matches in charge in the competition, which underlines the fact they were on a downward spiral.

That is despite Shi allowing the 46-year-old to spend more than £120million during the summer transfer window.

It is understood that Lage had a frosty relationship with members of his squad before losing the faith of the boardroom at Molineux.
