Nyck de Vries has said that it is 'not a given' that he will be in F1 next season despite being heavily linked to a drive for 2023.

The Dutchman has rather played himself into contention in recent weeks with a fine performance at the Italian Grand Prix, as he stepped in for Alex Albon who was suffering from appendicitis.

Indeed, he earned points on his debut for Williams and has since been linked with a permanent drive there for 2023, with him also competing in an FP1 session for them earlier on in the season, though that is not the only link we've seen the Dutchman at the centre of.

There has also been a great deal written to suggest that he has agreed to join AlphaTauri for 2023 and drive alongside Yuki Tsunoda, with Pierre Gasly tipped to vacate his seat there and head to Alpine to go alongside compatriot Esteban Ocon, with the Frenchman suggesting before the Singapore GP we'd get a full reveal over his future in the next couple of weeks.

Despite all of that, though, De Vries has maintained that him being in F1 is not guaranteed for 2023, with him telling Sky Sports:

“It’s not a given. My appearance in Monza helped and boosted my reputation in a short time, but it’s not up to me to decide whether I should be in a car or not.

“I hope that time will come to me, and it will materialise in an opportunity. To get an opportunity in Formula 1 everything has to be right, and it’s very much about timing and momentum.

“I’m not the first one who has gone off to do something else and maybe come back to get an opportunity or be on the sideline for a bit."

As De Vries mentions, he has driven in Formula E for the last few years and won the title in 2021, showing the evident talent he does have for racing.

He seems to be closer to an F1 drive than ever before at the moment but, until everything is rubber stamped and confirmed, it sounds like he won't be counting his chickens just yet...
