West Ham United have been dealt a ‘massive blow’ after it was confirmed versatile winger Maxwel Cornet suffered an injury in the Hammers’ 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, according to journalist Dean Jones.

David Moyes brought Cornet to the club as part of a summer overhaul that cost more than £160 million but he may have to make do without the Ivory Coast international.

What is the latest on Cornet?

The 25-year-old made his move to the London Stadium in August after a £17.5 million fee was paid to Burnley for his services.

After putting pen to paper, Cornet revealed he was ‘really happy’ to have joined the club, while Moyes added that he was ‘delighted’ with his new signing’s ‘versatility’.

However, he was made to wait for his first Premier League start, appearing in just three of their opening six top-flight games and racking up just 24 minutes from the bench.

On Saturday, his determination was finally rewarded him when Moyes picked him to start against Wolves in east London, only to limp from the field after just 34 minutes.

Moyes confirmed in his post-match press conference that his summer recruit had suffered a suspected calf injury but could not provide any more information.

What has Jones said on the injury?

Jones believes the setback will come as a blow to Cornet who has had to work hard to earn a place in the starting XI for West Ham.

The journalist adds that, due to the explosive nature of the player’s game, any muscle injury is going to be a big problem.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it’s a massive blow for the player. He's really had to wait for his chance and he's been desperate for a start. Any muscle injury for him is obviously going to be a limiter because, given his style of play, he can’t ease off and still be effective.”

Who can replace Cornet?

The winger replaced Pablo Fornals in the starting XI on Saturday and it was the Spaniard who came on in his place after the injury.

Meanwhile, Said Benrahma will be waiting in the wings to take his opportunity should he be called upon while Manuel Lanzini could also fill in for Cornet.

One big bright spot from the victory over Wolves will have been Jarrod Bowen’s return to goalscoring form, which may ease Moyes’ concerns going forward.
