Wolverhampton Wanderers managerial target Pedro Martins ‘ticks a lot of boxes’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Midlands outfit sacked former boss Bruno Lage following a 2-0 defeat to West Ham United over the weekend, a result which saw them enter the Premier League relegation zone.

What is the latest news involving Wolves?

Wolves ended last season in poor form following an impressive start, and Saturday’s result meant they had won just one of their previous 15 top-flight fixtures.

Lage was backed to the tune of around £120 million during the summer transfer market in an attempt to transform his side’s fortunes, but it was to no avail, and his 15-month tenure was brought to an end on Sunday.

And it seems as though Martins could be in line to replace his compatriot in the Molineux dugout after the Express & Star claimed Wolves are ‘considering a move’ for him.

The Telegraph claim that Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui and Bo Svensson of Mainz are ahead of the Portuguese tactician on Wolves’ shortlist at the moment in time, though, but both are currently employed.

A move for Martins, who is out of work, would be a cheaper, quicker and less complicated option and one that could appeal to the club’s owners.

What has Jones said about Martins?

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim is another reported target who would also be difficult to prise away from his existing position and Jones believes Martins may well be a ‘strong contender for that very reason’.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “Sounds to me like Pedro Martins might be a strong contender for that very reason.

“He does have strong links to various aspects of the setup at Wolves, and it might be a good solution for them. But for me, Martins seems to be one that ticks a lot of boxes, and I think that they will look down that avenue.”

Would Martins be a good appointment?

Martins was in charge of Greek giants Olympiacos from 2018 to 2022, claiming three league titles and one domestic cup along the way.

However, despite signing a two-year extension to his contract and winning the league last season, the 52-year-old was ruthlessly sacked in August after an embarrassing 4-0 home loss to Maccabi Haifa in a Champions League qualifier.

Martins has managed Wolves stars Daniel Podence and Jose Sa during their time at Olympiacos and is believed to have links to Jorge Mendes’ agency Gestifute.

Therefore, a deal to bring him to Wolves could be relatively straightforward due to Mendes’ close connection to the club.
