Aston Villa would ‘have to’ consider appointing Thomas Tuchel as their new boss if they were to move Steven Gerrard on, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Liverpool legend was handed more than £60 million to strengthen his squad during the summer but has come under pressure after a disappointing start to the season.

What is the latest on Gerrard?

According to Football Insider, Villa have been ‘sounding out’ Villarreal manager Unai Emery as well as former Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino as possible replacements for Gerrard.

The report adds that the club’s owners, Naseef Sawiris and Wes Edens, are keeping their options open regarding a change.

It is understood that Pochettino would be open to taking on the role in the West Midlands and is not exclusively looking at jobs in the Champions League.

The Argentinian was recently spotted attending England’s Nations League clash with Germany at Wembley, hinting further at a possible return to the Premier League.

Villarreal, meanwhile, are looking to tie Emery down to a new deal with the Spaniard’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

What has Jones said on a possible replacement?

Jones believes that the contract situation of Emery at Villarreal would mean he is likely to come under consideration at Villa Park.

But the journalist suggests that former Chelsea manager Tuchel would have to be approached as well after he was sacked earlier this term.

When asked about Emery, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I think his contract situation means he would be under consideration but I think the same would have to apply to Thomas Tuchel. He's out of work. You would have to look at managers of that type just in case you could entice them.”

Is Gerrard at risk?

Villa suffered another disappointing result on Saturday afternoon as they were held to a 0-0 draw by 10-man Leeds at Elland Road.

It leaves Gerrard’s side sitting precariously in 14th place, just two points above the relegation zone with eight matches played.

They have also scored just six goals in that time. When you consider Villa boast the likes of Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, Philippe Coutinho and Emiliano Buendia, that is a disappointing total.

The manager himself has previously admitted to feeling the pressure in his role after they were beaten by Arsenal at the end of August. It would not be a surprise if he is on edge once again.
