Cody Rhodes was planned to win the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship under Vince McMahon, a new report has claimed.

Pretty much since he returned in April at WrestleMania 38, it seemed like all signs were pointing towards Cody having a run as World Champion.

However, a surprising report from Fightful Select has claimed that Vince McMahon wasn't planning on having it happen.

What were Vince McMahon's plans for Cody Rhodes?

Vince McMahon was clearly a big plan of Roman Reigns, making him the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at WrestleMania 38, just three months before his retirement.

However, fans pretty much all speculated that the ex-CEO was planning on giving Cody a run with the belts before too long, but it seems like those rumours were wide of the mark.

Fightful Select reported yesterday that there were never any plans under McMahon's regime to have Cody beat Roman to become champion.

Vince McMahon had not solidified plans to make Cody Rhodes the WWE or Universal Champion. Many assumed it was happening, but we've heard that there were not firm plans for the title change in place.

The same report notes that Vince was, instead, fully focused on his push of Roman, with there being no plans for 'The Tribal Chief' to drop his titles to anyone, never mind Cody.

Instead, we were told that Vince McMahon was "all on board" for the Roman Reigns double title reign, and there weren't ideas floated from Vince that would have indicated he was ready to move on from that this summer.

When is Cody Rhodes returning to WWE?

Cody hasn't been seen on WWE TV since June following his incredible match with Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell.

What made the match incredibly memorable was the fact that Cody walked in having completely torn his right pec while training in the days before the show.

Because Cody's injury was so bad, it was deemed that he could do no more damage to himself by wrestling, so the doctors let the match go ahead as planned.

Ever since his injury, fans have been speculating that a return at the Royal Rumble would be the perfect way to bring Rhodes back, if he's fit and healthy by the show.

However, the former AEW star was recently left off the poster for the show, leading some fans to speculate that he won't be ready to return until AFTER January 2023.
