Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Antonio Adan had an absolute disaster in Marseille on Tuesday evening.

The Portuguese outfit travelled to the south of France for the third round of Champions League group games and went into the clash with a 100% record in the competition so far.

However, a night to forget between the sticks for Adan cost his team big time with the goalkeeper being directly responsible for the team conceding two goals, before then being red carded for a moment of sheer madness.

Adan's role in Marseille's two goals

Sporting took the lead in the match after Francisco Trincao scored with an impressive strike in just the first minute of play.

But the lead was short lived. For just 12 minutes later, Adan got caught dilly-dallying in possession in his own penalty area and ended up kicking the ball straight at Alexis Sanchez.

The ball rebounded off the Chilean's leg and travelled straight into the net to bring the scores level.

Okay, so that was pretty bad from Adan but making errors is part and parcel of being a goalkeeper.

It's about how they respond which really counts.

Unfortunately for Adan on the night, though, things went from bad to worse for the Spaniard.

Just three minutes later and he had cheaply given the ball away again, passing it straight into the path of a Marseille player despite being under no pressure.

The mistake was punished by the French side with Amine Harit firing home the goal.

Adan's red card

And just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for poor Adan, well, he went and got himself sent off.

A long kick up the pitch by Marseille got in behind the Sporting defence and was met by a charging Adan, who was attempting to beat his opponent to the ball.

It looked as if his teammate may have had the situation covered anyway, but Adan lost the race and as the ball was knocked over his head, the keeper panicked and handled the ball outside his area.

The referee had no choice but to red card the player based upon the principle that he deliberately prevented a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Wow, now that is a performance Adan will want to forget in a hurry.

Marseille capitalised on their added advantage of having an extra man shortly after, making it 3-1 in the 28th minute.
