Inter 1-0 Barcelona: Xavi seething as VAR denies Blaugrana last minute penalty

Barcelona were denied a late penalty in their Champions League clash vs Inter Milan on Tuesday evening.

The Spanish club fell to a disappointing 1-0 loss at the San Siro.

A result which leaves them languishing in third place in the group overall, three points behind Inter, and six points behind Bayern Munich.

If they don’t buck their ideas up sharpish, they’ll find themselves in the Europa League this season.

And that premise wasn’t lost on them going into this encounter either, with Xavi Hernandez’s men throwing everything at it in their pursuit of three points.

Unfortunately, though, Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s single goal in the 47th minute of action was enough to separate the sides, with Barcelona even being cruelly denied an equaliser in the second half after Pedri struck home from close range.

Barca denied penalty by VAR

It could all have been so different, however, had a late penalty call gone in the Blaugrana’s favour.

A clumsy moment from Denzel Dumfries in the box saw the Dutchman rise for a header, miss the ball and then seemingly strike it with his outstretched arm.

The referee missed the incident as it happened. However, appeals from Barca led to the VAR team checking the replays, who then decided against suggesting the referee goes to consult the monitor.

Xavi raging about the incident

Barcelona boss Xavi was absolutely furious about the incident.

Speaking after the game, per Barca Universal, Xavi said: “I’m pis*ed off. The referees should come out and explain decisions because we don’t understand anything.

“The referee left and said nothing. I’m outraged. We don’t understand. That is the word, outraged.”

The gravity of the loss is no doubt fuelling Xavi’s anger right now.

The two clubs will meet again at the Camp Nou next week, in what is now almost certainly set to be a fierce clash.

Should Barca lose to Inter, they’ll be six points behind the Italian club with just two games remaining and their hopes of progressing in the 2022/23 Champions League will be all but over.
