Manchester United star Anthony Martial has enjoyed an 'unexpected confidence boost' and could be in line to break into the starting line-up at Old Trafford, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The striker has been on the Red Devils' books for seven years, having made the move from Monaco after a deal worth up to £58million was agreed, and he was recently among the goals once again.

What's the latest news involving Martial?

Martial has endured a frustrating start to the season, with injuries restricting his amount of time on the pitch.

But he made an impact during the 6-3 thumping at the hands of rivals Manchester City last weekend, bagging a late brace.

It has emerged that Martial is seen as an 'important' part of ten Hag's plans following an impressive pre-season.

However, it is understood that Sevilla and Valencia are showing an interest in the 26-year-old and could look to pounce when the transfer window reopens in January.

Martial spent the second half of last season on loan with Sevilla, where he scored one goal in 12 appearances.

What has Dean Jones said about Martial?

Jones believes Martial's goalscoring contribution from the bench was one of the few positives to come from Manchester United's defeat to their cross-city neighbours last Sunday.

The journalist feels ten Hag is eager to throw the frontman into the starting line-up when he is fully fit.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "It's definitely a positive and it's an unexpected confidence boost for him too.

"It means United can probably shake up their attack more confidently now when the time comes and they've got all of these guys available.

"I think he'll want to start Martial at centre forward. That's been the plan since pre-season, so it would make sense that Martial, once he's able to start, will go straight back into that role."

What is Martial's contract situation?

Martial's £250,000-per-week contract is due to expire in the summer of 2024, although Manchester United hold the option of extending the agreement by a further 12 months.

That leaves the Red Devils in a strong negotiating position if Sevilla or Valencia strengthen their interest in the 30-cap France international.

However, Martial will reportedly only sign a new Old Trafford deal if it becomes clear that he will be handed enough game-time.

Any discussions over fresh terms have been put on hold though, as ten Hag has told the Manchester United hierarchy not to offer any new contracts until he works out who deserves to remain at Old Trafford.
