Joe Rogan has given his thoughts on what turned Charles Oliveira into a UFC champion after years of adversity.

Over the course of the last four years, Charles Oliveira has done a complete 180 in his mixed martial arts career.

The Brazilian was always a talented fighter who knew how to compete in the UFC, but now, he’s a man riding an 11-fight win streak with a reputation as the best lightweight on the planet.

Of course, he isn’t technically the UFC lightweight champ right now after having the title stripped from him, but the level of competition he’s beaten is out of this world.

In just his last five fights alone he has defeated Kevin Lee, Tony Ferguson, Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, also known as a who’s who of elite 155-pound stars.

‘Do Bronx’ is riding the biggest wave of his career and after being dubbed a quitter by many in the past, nobody can deny the heart he’s showcased in recent times.

Joe Rogan, who has watched on in awe as Oliveira has climbed through the ranks, recently explained what he’d heard regarding Charles’ big turnaround.

“Something happened to him and that’s a great example of judging a guy by his losses. If you look at his losses to Cub Swanson, if you look at his losses to Paul Felder, you’re like, there’s no way this guy is the best in the world. Something happened and I think they said that it’s the birth of his daughter. When his kid was born, he just changed everything. He just became like this ferocious f***ing assassin!”

“There’s no one who’s been like that. You see one version of them that kind of has a little bit of quit in them and then a version that is unstoppable.”

The next obstacle

In what is arguably his toughest test to date, Charles Oliveira will meet Islam Makhachev at UFC 280 later this month as the two battle it out over the UFC lightweight championship.

Makhachev is seen by many as the successor to Khabib Nurmagomedov, his close friend and training partner, with a lot of pundits viewing him as the favourite in this contest.

Alas, Oliveira has been doubted and counted out so many times before, and he’ll use this as further motivation in an attempt to become the two-time king of the castle.
