Aston Villa owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris are unlikely to sack manager Steven Gerrard any time soon because of the amount of money they have invested in his Villa Park tenure so far, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Liverpool legend has overseen a tough start to the season for the West Midlands giants and the pressure is growing on him in the dugout.

What is the latest Villa news?

Gerrard saw his side held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Leeds United on Saturday, despite Jesse Marsch’s charges playing nearly the entire second half with 10 men.

The following days have seen the manager gather his players together for a ‘collective meeting’, admitting that the club have been ‘really frustrated’ with their start to the season.

After eight games, Villa sit in 14th place and just two points clear of the relegation zone, having picked up two wins and scored only eight goals all season.

The club have reportedly sounded out the possibility of hiring either Mauricio Pochettino or Unai Emery as their next manager should they sack Gerrard.

The former Tottenham boss is said to be open to the prospect and is not closing himself off to roles outside of the Champions League.

What has Sheth said on Gerrard?

Sheth cannot see the former midfielder being sacked by Villa any time soon after they pushed hard to bring him in from Rangers less than 12 months ago.

The Sky Sports reporter adds that the level of investment made in Gerrard is another sign that they will not pull the trigger in a hurry.

Sheth told GIVEMESPORT: “I can't see a situation where Villa would sack him simply because they tried so hard in the first place to get him. They've put a lot of investment, not only in Steven Gerrard, but in the playing squad that Steven Gerrard wanted to bring in as well, so they have backed him in the transfer window.”

How much have Villa invested in Gerrard?

The 2022 January transfer window was the 41-year-old’s first at the helm of Villa, with £25 million splashed on Everton left-back Lucas Digne.

Calum Chambers also arrived on a free transfer while Robin Olsen and Philippe Coutinho signed on loan deals.

This summer saw more than £60 million spent on further recruits, taking the total transfer investment in Gerrard’s squad above £85 million.

However, wages have not been insignificant in his tenure either, with three of his new recruits earning more than £100,000 per week.
