Tottenham Hotspur could set their sights on tempting Leicester City talisman James Maddison to Hotspur Way next summer, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Although Spurs boss Antonio Conte spent more than £150million during the summer transfer window, he was unable to secure the services of an attacking midfielder.

What's the latest news involving Maddison?

Despite Leicester's struggles during the early stages of the season, with them finding themselves in the Premier League's relegation zone, Maddison has still been in fine form.

He has found the back of the net five times and registered a further two assists in seven top flight appearances so far.

Despite that, Maddison was left out of the England squad for the Nations League clashes against Italy and Germany last month, leading to serious question marks over whether he will be heading to the World Cup in Qatar.

It is understood that Tottenham seriously considered making a move for the 25-year-old during the summer transfer window, but he remained in the Midlands.

Spurs have not been Maddison's only suitors as Newcastle United failed with two bids which fell short of his £60million price tag.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Maddison?

O'Rourke believes it will be difficult for Tottenham to prise Maddison away from Leicester when the transfer window reopens in January.

However, he feels the north Londoners could head to the negotiating table at the end of the season, along with numerous other admirers.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "I think it's a hard deal to do in January, but it's one to maybe keep an eye on next summer, especially if Leicester are struggling at the wrong end of the table.

"Spurs, I'm sure, will be among a number of clubs looking at Maddison."

Would Maddison be a good signing for Spurs?

Leicester chief Rodgers described Maddison as 'absolutely brilliant' after he grabbed a brace in his current employers' 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Monday.

Additionally, statistics show that he has been the Foxes' best performer during the early stages of the Premier League campaign.

However, Tottenham may face a tough battle in their attempts to sign the one-cap England international in the coming months.

That is because Leicester are keen to keep Maddison at the King Power Stadium and have opened talks over a new contract.

It seems that Newcastle’s interest is not going away either, with the Magpies setting their sights on sealing his arrival in 2023.
