Wayne Rooney will go down in history as a bona fide Manchester United legend.

After putting the Premier League on notice with his electric performances as an Everton teenager, Sir Alex Ferguson swooped to ensure Rooney would spend the best years of his career at Old Trafford.

It was a match made in heaven right from the start, with Rooney taking to his new surroundings with unerring ease and speed.

Once the goals started flowing, they simply didn't stop, with Rooney quickly becoming a crucial cog in Ferguson's relentless winning machine.

He would go on to become the all-time record scorer in the famous Manchester red, netting a staggering 253 goals in 559 appearances for the club.

Couple that with the 146 assists he notched up, and you begin to get an idea of the remarkable impact the man had at the club.

However, if you need yet more evidence, we need only point to his five Premier league titles and one Champions League triumph.

Wayne Rooney leaving Manchester United behind

Of course, all good tings must come to an end and, even legends must step aside to let the new generation take up the mantle.

That is exactly what Rooney did as he draw a line under his heady United days and returned to his beloved boyhood club, Everton.

The devout fans on the terraces of Goodison Park couldn't have been happier to see him as Rooney chipped in with 11 goals during the 2017/18 season.

One of his best moments, however, came not in the form of the goal or a pass but instead from an incident that occurred off the pitch.

Wayne Rooney blanks Paul Pogba in the tunnel

As Everton welcomed a new look United to Merseyside, Rooney showed that he really is a member of the old-guard with his reaction to Paul Pogba in the tunnel.

Pogba, who had played for a season with Rooney under Jose Mourinho, tried all he could to greet him in the tunnel, but was met with unrelenting, stoney silence.

Brilliant. You can imagine that a certain Roy Keane would have been very proud.

Ultimately, Pogba would get the last laugh as United cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win with the French superstar claiming the Man of the Match award to boot.

Despite Rooney's best efforts, Everton would go on to finish eighth in a rather underwhelming campaign.

All the same, when the pages of history are writ, it will be Rooney who is seen more favourably than Pogba.
