Tottenham Hotspur could finally replace Christian Eriksen with Leicester City’s James Maddison, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
Maddison has been strongly linked with a move away from the Foxes in recent months, and Hotspur Way has been sounded out as a potential destination for the in-demand star.
What is the latest news involving Maddison?
Over the summer, Paul O’Keefe, who is an FA Registered Intermediary, has claimed that Tottenham were ‘very seriously considering’ making a move for Maddison.
A formal offer failed to materialise from Spurs, though, but Newcastle United did try their luck for the one-cap England international.
The Guardian revealed that the Magpies saw two offers rebuffed for Maddison by Leicester, with the second totalling £50 million as his current employers value him at £60m.
However, with his contract due to expire in the summer of 2024, Leicester may be forced to part ways with their prized asset imminently if he refuses to put pen to paper on fresh terms or risk losing him for free.
Only time will tell if Tottenham revive their interest in Maddison, yet if he maintains his current run of form, then he is unlikely to be short of options.
What has O’Rourke said about Maddison?
O’Rourke believes that Maddison could fill the boots of Eriksen, who departed north London back in January 2020 and fill the creative void he left behind.
In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “His stats and numbers for Leicester this season have been superb as well.
“So, I think he could possibly go in and fill those boots of Christian Eriksen that Spurs have lacked since his departure.”
Would Maddison be a good signing?
Tottenham have signed a plethora of attacking midfielders in recent years, bringing in the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Bryan Gil.
Nevertheless, none have proved to be successful, and both Lo Celso and Ndombele are spending the entire 2022/23 campaign on loan at Villarreal and Napoli, respectively.
Maddison, on the other hand, enjoyed the most productive season of his senior career last time out, registering 18 goals and 12 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions.
And Maddison has maintained those levels in the current campaign, racking up seven goal contributions in eight games, highlighting why Tottenham may be contemplating bringing him to the capital.
