Tennis star Iga Świątek has recorded the most wins in a single season since Caroline Wozniacki in 2017.

Świątek, the current world number one, has enjoyed a brilliant year so far.

The 21-year-old dominated during the first half of 2022, clinching the world number one spot while on a 37-match winning streak.

She was not as formidable in the latter stages of the season, but still managed to win her first title at the US Open in September.

With the WTA Finals on the horizon, Świątek has now earned her 58th victory of the season, surpassing the 57 wins racked up by Ashleigh Barty in 2019.

Iga Świątek surpasses Ashleigh Barty’s record

Świątek’s 58th victory of the season came against Ajla Tomljanović in the Ostrava Open round of 16.

Tomljanović showed spirit as Świątek won the first set 7-5, but the Australian was then forced to withdraw from the second set with a knee injury.

Świątek could now overtake the 60 victories achieved by Wozniacki in 2017, particularly if she goes on to win the Ostrava Open or emerges triumphant from the WTA Finals.

But she is still some way off the 63 wins set by Angelique Kerber in 2016, or the astonishing 78 victories earned by Serena Williams in 2013.

Iga Świątek’s record-breaking year

Świątek has made history during a magnificent season on the WTA Tour.

She triumphed for the second time at the French Open in June, with her victory part of an impressive winning streak which saw her claim six successive WTA titles.

Świątek’s first title of the year came in February when she won the Qatar Open. She then became just the fourth woman in history to complete the Sunshine Double, clinching back-to-back Indian Wells and Miami Open titles.

This was followed by victories at the Stuttgart Open and Italian Open, before glory at Roland-Garros.

Świątek’s winning streak was ended by Alizé Cornet in the third round of Wimbledon, and she subsequently suffered third round exits from both the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open.

But she was back on top at Flushing Meadows, becoming the first Polish woman in history to win the US Open.
