‘Iron’ Mike Tyson is widely considered as one of boxing’s all-time greats.

He’s one of the most recognisable names in the sport’s history due to his championship accolades and blockbuster fights.

Tyson won his first 19 professional fights by knockout with 12 of them coming in the first round.

Mike Tyson’s brilliant boxing career

He captured his first championship at 20 years old and went on to become the first boxer to hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles simultaneously.

As his career progressed, ‘Iron’ Mike developed a ‘bad boy’ image for himself due to controversial behaviour both in and out of the ring.

Though, his ferocious performances never slowed down. Tyson has an overall knockout-to-win percentage of 88% and is one of the heaviest hitters to have stepped into a ring.

He’s had many iconic rivalries over the years and one of his greatest foes was Evander Holyfield. During a comeback run, Tyson regained the WBA  championship from Bruce Seldon which Holyfield aimed to take from him in their first encounter.

Holyfield came into the fight as a huge underdog, but, in a huge upset, he was able to defeat Tyson by TKO. This came when referee Mitch Halpern stopped the fight in round 11 but the victory was tainted by accusations of frequent headbutting towards Holyfield.

The misbehaviour of Holyfield led to Tyson’s camp requesting a different referee for the rematch, which is ironic given what went down during that fight.

In one of the most infamous moments in sporting history, the fight was stopped not once but twice due to Tyson biting his opponent’s ears.

The bites even resulted in part of Holyfield’s ear coming off and being left in the ring following the bout.

A clip shared by Twitter user @hardfightvideos highlights the chaos that unfolded following the strange ending to the fight.

Tyson remained aggressive and wanted to continue the hostility whilst more and more people flooded the ring to try and calm the situation down.

It took several men to separate the two but the tension was immense. There was pushing and shoving in the ring which prompted the police to step in.

It was one of the craziest moments in sporting history. In Tyson’s mind, it was retaliation for the blatant headbutting in the previous affair but his actions resulted in his boxing license being revoked.

Tyson was eventually allowed back into a ring but the incidents of the fight certainly went down in history.
