Emma Raducanu has finally spoken on her latest tournament withdrawal, which has drawn an early close to her 2022 season.

The British number one was forced to retire from the Transylvania Open earlier this week due a wrist injury.

Her latest setback meant she was unable to make a single appearance at the tournament on the home soil of her Romanian-born father.

Raducanu reached the quarter-finals during her last time in Cluj-Napoca but she will now have to wait another year to attempt to improve on that result.

She was also hoping for a strong October to give her the opportunity to crack the world top 50 again, but these efforts are now also halted until the new year.

What has Emma Raducanu said?

Usually, Raducanu provides some context on her injuries.

When blistered feet affected her performance at the Billie Jean King Cup, she admitted the gruesome nature of her issue had left her with "no toenails" as she was trying to adapt to playing on clay.

Raducanu also gave an update on her injury at the Nottingham Open. Visibly in pain with her left side, she was forced to withdraw in the first round after receiving a medical timeout. During a post match interview, the Brit described it as "a freak injury" that required a follow-up scan.

So when it comes to informing supporters on her injury status, she is usually very vocal and provides as much information as she can.

However, it seems as though her withdrawal from the Transylvania Open has perhaps been a bigger blow than other retirements this year.

The 19-year-old did not give an interview on her latest injury. But she has since posted an Instagram story with a picture of herself walking off the court, with the words: "Sad to miss my Cluj friends this year," alongside a sad face emoji.

Raducanu's Transylvania Open debut last year was a special moment for her and she admitted she was "extremely excited" to play at the home tournament of her father.

Emma Raducanu injury history

This is the sixth time Raducanu has withdrawn injured from a tournament since she made her WTA Tour last June.

The first occasion was at Wimbledon 2021, her Grand Slam debut. The teenager was forced to retire with breathing difficulties after reaching the fourth round.

After that, she went on to triumph at the US Open and become the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title. But her luck rapidly faded after her monumental achievement in New York.

In 2022, Raducanu has pulled out of five tournaments, the first being the Abierto Zapopan in February.

After her first round match against Daria Saville went beyond the three-and-a-half hour mark, the Brit threw in the towel due to leg cramping and fatigue.

Two more first round withdrawals came during the Italian Open and Nottingham Open after struggling with respective back and side injuries.

She was then dealt another blow when her strong run at the Korea Open came to an end against Jelena Ostapenko in the semi-final due to a glute problem.

Now, Raducanu will miss the Transylvania Open as a result of a wrist injury, which has also drawn an early close to her 2022 season.
