West Ham United would have been willing to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan in the summer transfer window had the chance presented itself, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

Eight new faces arrived at the London Stadium following the end of last season and over £160 million was spent, but David Moyes may have been left wanting more.

What is the latest on Gallagher?

The 22-year-old claimed his first goal contribution of the season last weekend when he curled in a brilliant late winner against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

It marked a continuation of the fine form he had shown while on international duty with England’s under-21’s, where he claimed two goals and an assist in clashes with Italy and Germany.

After a summer of speculation, Gallagher will be hoping to set about establishing himself in the Blues’ first team under Graham Potter.

Palace were eager to take the youngster back to south London after he had enjoyed a successful loan spell under Patrick Vieira last term, submitting a £27 million offer for his services.

However, Newcastle United were also admirers and made Gallagher their top target for the window, with Chelsea valuing their asset at £40 million.

What has Bridge said on the midfielder?

Bridge understands that West Ham would have also been eager to bring Gallagher in on loan had the chance arose.

The Sky Sports reporter adds that, thanks to his great attitude, the player is starting to show his class for Chelsea as well.

Bridge told GIVEMESPORT: “In the Leeds and Leicester games he was trying too hard and you could see that against Leicester when he got sent off. Against, Leeds he was played out of position and part of a bad team performance all round. You can tell he's got a great attitude. He didn't want to go back on loan. A number of Premier League clubs would have taken him on loan. I think West Ham would have taken him as well.”

Would Gallagher have been a good signing?

After a 2021-22 campaign that saw the Cobham graduate score eight goals and provide five assists in all competitions, it is easy to see why Gallagher was in demand.

With Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek Moyes’s only senior midfield options at the end of last term, it was clear reinforcements were needed.

But although Gallagher did not sign, West Ham still bolstered the area with the transfers of Flynn Downes and Lucas Paqueta.

While a move for Gallagher may have seemed logical at one stage for the Hammers, he no longer appears to be a necessity.
