British boxing legend Nigel Benn has defended his son Conor Benn for failing a drugs test which led to the cancellation of his fight with Chris Eubank Jr.

Earlier this week, it emerged that Benn had returned an adverse finding for the banned substance clomifene during a routine check carried out by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA).

Also known as clomiphene, clomifene is a medication used to treat infertility in women but it can also increase testosterone levels in men.

Shortly after the news broke the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) prohibited the fight, stating it was not in "the best interests of boxing."

And the bout was officially postponed despite both fighters apparently expressing their willingness to take to the ring at the O2 Arena on Saturday.

A shocked Benn was left flabbergasted by the news but immediately protested his son's innocence as he insisted that he hasn't done anything wrong.

"Hi guys, as you know we're in total shock," he said in a video on Twitter. "I've been with my son for the last ten weeks and the training has absolutely gone the best it could have been.

"He's a dedicated trainer, he leaves no stone unturned and we'll get to the bottom of this, I love my son.

"I know he don't cut no corners, he just goes straight at it 100 per cent but we'll keep you informed, we'll let you know what the next step is. But he's a faithful trainer and a clean athlete, speak to you all soon, God bless."

Benn, meanwhile, has also strongly denied any wrongdoing.

"I am truly gutted we are unable to make this fight happen on Saturday and I am sorry to everybody who has been affected by this postponement,” he said in a statement.

“I am still shocked by this and shocked by this, and it has been a tough couple of days.

“My team and I will consider the next options including rescheduling the flight, but my immediate focus is on cleaning my name because I am a clean athlete!”
