Chelsea are taking 'admiring glances' at Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli and the Stamford Bridge interest 'might develop down the line', according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The Blues spent more than £250million during the summer transfer window, but head coach Graham Potter will be given the opportunity to welcome further reinforcements to west London at the turn of the year.

What's the latest news involving Martinelli?

Martinelli played a pivotal role as Arsenal overcame Liverpool at the weekend, scoring inside the opening minute and grabbing an assist.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are among a number of clubs monitoring the 21-year-old's situation and mulling over whether to test his current employers' resolve.

The report suggests Martinelli, a three-cap Brazil international, has been gaining the attention of Arsenal's top four rivals in recent months.

Although the winger's current agreement – which is worth £90,000-per-week – is due to expire in the summer of 2024, there is an option for Arsenal to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium by 12 months.

Since the campaign got underway, Martinelli has found the back of the net four times and registered a further two assists in 11 outings.

What has Simon Phillips said about Martinelli?

Phillips understands that Martinelli is not at the forefront of Potter's transfer plans at the moment, although Chelsea are admirers.

The journalist has refused to rule out the possibility of the capital club strengthening their interest in the future.

Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: "I haven't heard that he is a serious target for Chelsea. I am sure it's probably a case of some distant interest from the club, as many clubs will be taking admiring glances.

"Right now, it probably isn't one to keep a close eye on but something might develop down the line."

Could Chelsea sign Martinelli in January?

Although the transfer window will reopen at the turn of the year, it seems unlikely that Martinelli will head to Chelsea midway through the season as journalist Dean Jones has previously told GIVEMESPORT that it is 'unthinkable' that Arsenal would sanction the move.

To make matters even more difficult for the Blues, it is understood that the Gunners are keen to reward the South American with a new contract following the progress he has shown under boss Mikel Arteta.

Potter, who moved into the Chelsea hot seat last month, will almost certainly have to look elsewhere if Arsenal and Martinelli come to an agreement over fresh terms.
