Southampton could make a 'really interesting' appointment by handing Domenico Tedesco the St Mary's reins, while Bo Svensson also 'fits the bill' as a Ralph Hasenhuttl successor, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Saints are only separated from the relegation zone by one point following a worrying start to the Premier League campaign.

What's the latest news involving Hasenhuttl?

According to The Telegraph, Hasenhuttl is on the brink of the sack and the Southampton hierarchy are now considering the timing of his dismissal.

The report suggests the Austrian has been under pressure for some time and Sport Republic, who completed a takeover during the early stages of 2022, are preparing to make a change in the dugout.

It comes after it was reported in August that Hasenhuttl had lost the trust of several players within the dressing room and members of the squad were surprised that he was not axed during the summer.

Southampton are understood to be considering Tedesco as a potential successor to the 55-year-old as they ramp up their search.

The 37-year-old has been out of work since being given the boot by Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig just a matter of hours after their Champions League group stage-opening defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk last month.

What has Dean Jones said about Tedesco and Svensson?

Jones believes Tedesco and Svensson are in the running to replace Hasenhuttl in the Southampton hot seat.

The journalist feels both men could make the Saints job their own and lead the south coast club away from the wrong end of the Premier League table.

When asked whether Tedesco and Svensson would be on Southampton's radar, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "Yes, definitely. It makes sense that they would want to bring in someone now who is completely new to the environment and can analyse everything firsthand with their own staff.

"I think Tedesco would be a really interesting one, if they could get him. Bo Svensson, too, probably fits the bill on a surface level, but then what it will come down to is conversations on whether the club and the personal visions marry up."

Are Southampton more likely to appoint Tedesco or Svensson?

Svensson may prove to be difficult to lure to Southampton as he is currently in charge of Mainz, where he has won 28 of his 66 matches at the helm.

That means Saints would have to part with a compensation fee in order to secure the Dane, who has previously bossed Liefering and his current employers at youth level.

With that being the case, Tedesco - who won silverware during his time in the Leipzig dugout - is potentially a more likely appointment.

However, a move for Svensson should not be ruled out as he was also linked with the Brighton & Hove Albion job last month and leaving Mainz for the Premier League may be appealing.
