Manchester United were 'not prepared' for Anthony Martial's latest injury and are frustrated that he is back on the Old Trafford treatment table, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The frontman became the world's most expensive teenager when he completed a £58million move from Monaco seven years ago, but he is set for another spell on the sidelines.

What's the latest news involving Martial?

Having already provided an assist in the 2-1 win over Everton last weekend, Martial was forced off the pitch with just 29 minutes on the clock.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has revealed the 26-year-old suffered a back problem at Goodison Park and it was not a recurrence of an injury which has already seen him miss the majority of the new campaign.

It appears that Martial's latest lay-off has put the 30-cap France international's hopes of heading to the World Cup next month in jeopardy.

Didier Deschamps, the France head coach, is reportedly set to snub the striker in favour of a more durable option as the flight to Qatar nears.

Martial only returned to Manchester United in the summer, having spent the second half of last season on loan with La Liga giants Sevilla.

What has Dean Jones said about Martial?

Jones believes ten Hag's side are more of a threat with Martial on the pitch and, as a result, being unable to call upon him will be a concern.

The journalist feels the former Lyon frontman's Manchester United career has been blighted by injuries and more should have been done to ensure the Red Devils are not weaker without him.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "It's hugely frustrating because United are so much more dangerous with him on the pitch, but we know you can't rely on him to be fit.

"Every season, he has problems. That's been a sad reality for him in the past few years and United have not been well enough prepared for this moment."

How has Martial performed this season?

Despite being restricted to just 133 minutes of action, Martial has already found the back of the net three times and registered a further two assists during the early stages of the campaign.

That kind of form has resulted in Spanish sides Sevilla and Valencia reportedly showing an interest ahead of the transfer window reopening in January.

It has emerged that Martial is seen as an 'important' part of ten Hag’s plans following an impressive pre-season, so Manchester United will be hoping for a swift recovery from the back issue.
