Arsenal will have PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo on their shortlist of ‘targets’ for the upcoming transfer windows, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Gunners were unsuccessful in their efforts to sign a wide attacker over the summer and could focus their attention on the in-demand 23-year-old when the market re-opens for business.

What is the latest news involving Gakpo?

A recent report from The Athletic revealed that Arsenal have entered the running for Gakpo’s signature alongside Real Madrid following his outstanding start to the current campaign.

In the previous transfer window, it appeared as though he was set for a switch to Manchester United before they decided to focus their attention and resources on Antony instead.

That left the door open to Premier League duo Leeds and Southampton, although transfer expert David Ornstein states that Gakpo has now set his sights on clubs with loftier ambitions.

The Netherlands international has racked up a remarkable 13 goals and 10 assists in 16 appearances for PSV this season, catching the eye of some of Europe’s top teams.

Erik ten Hag’s United are said to be contemplating whether to revive their interest in Gakpo, who could be available for as little as £30 million.

What has O’Rourke said about Gakpo?

O’Rourke believes that out wide is an area of the pitch Arteta ‘would like to strengthen’ and that Gakpo is likely to be on his radar when assessing potential options.

He told GiveMeSport: “Arsenal were in the market for a wide player just before the close of the summer transfer window.

“So, I still think it's an area of the team that Mikel Arteta would like to strengthen, and I'm sure Cody Gakpo would definitely figure on those lists of targets.”

Where would Gakpo fit in at Arsenal?

Dean Jones has previously described Gakpo’s form as ‘unreal’, and it is little surprise that the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Real Madrid are among his potential suitors.

The versatile star has predominantly lined up on the left wing throughout his senior career, although is also comfortable playing upfront.

At present, Gabriel Martinelli is the only natural option in that position for Arteta, meaning Gakpo would provide some much-needed cover and competition for the Brazilian.

Fending off the competition for Gakpo’s signature would be another sign of Arsenal’s newfound status and could provide a significant boost to their ongoing revolution.
