Rio Ferdiand and Ally McCoist went absolutely mental after Rangers opened the scoring against Liverpool on Wednesday evening.

The two giants of British football clashed in the fourth round of the Champions League group phase.

Rangers were yet to taste victory this season in Europe's most fierce competition, whilst Liverpool occupied second spot in the group and knew that a victory would leave them within touching distance of qualification to the knockouts.

How did the game pan out?

The Scottish side showed plenty of early promise, taking the lead in the first half through Scott Arfield who clinically converted past Alisson from the edge of the area.

But unfortunately for Rangers, that was to be the only piece of effective finishing they could muster on the night, and they scuppered plenty of other valuable opportunities throughout the match.

Liverpool, on the other hand, were lethal in front of goal.

Roberto Firmino drew the scores level in the 24th minute, nodding home from a corner at the front post.

Before the Reds really stepped on the gas after the break and blew Rangers away.

Roberto Firmino celebrates scoring for Liverpool vs Rangers

Firmino scored a second after Joe Gomez whipped a Trent Alexander-Arnold-esque cross into the danger area and put it on a plate for the Brazilian.

Then Darwin Nunez notched his second goal in as many games, curling the ball beyond Allan McGregor and into the far corner - again, Firmino was involved with a delightful little assist.

And then it became the Mohamed Salah show. The Egyptian, who has struggled for form in recent times, scored three goals across seven scintillating minutes after coming off the bench and in doing so, smashed the record for the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history.

But aside from the performance on the pitch, there is one moment that has caught the attention of Liverpool fans on social media.

Shared to BT Sport's Twitter, the clip shows pundits Ferdinand and McCoist going absolutely wild when Rangers opened the scoring.

The duo were jumping around, screaming and grabbing each other in chaotic scenes.

Their elation was obviously short lived, though, and Kopites have been making sure to remind them of exactly that.

WATCH: Ferdiand and McCoist lose it

To be fair to McCoist, he is a Rangers fan and so can easily be forgiven.

Ferdiand would have been celebrating so heavily because of his Manchester United links - and it's not the first time he's done such a thing either.

Those of you with an excellent memory will remember Ferdinand and Gary Lineker going mad after Lionel Messi made it 3-0 in the Champions League semi-final of 2019.

The funny thing is, that one came back to bite him, too.
