Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta would be able ‘keep his squad on their toes’ if he were to add PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo to his side in January, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Arteta spent more than £100 million on new transfers in the summer but could soon be ready to reinvest at the Emirates Stadium once again.

What is the latest on Gakpo?

According to The Athletic, Arsenal are among a number of sides keeping an eye on the 23-year-old’s progress in the Eredivisie and could make their move at the turn of the year.

The report adds that Real Madrid and Manchester United also remain in contention as other possible destinations although a move to Leeds United now appears unlikely.

The Red Devils considered signing Gakpo during the summer window and were quoted £38 million as PSV's selling price for the nine-cap Netherlands international.

This season has seen the forward catch the eye ahead of the upcoming Qatar World Cup, scoring 13 times in 16 appearances and contributing another 11 assists.

What has Jones said on the situation?

Jones believes that Arteta needs to keep his squad on their toes and that the Spaniard should not want any of his players to get too comfortable.

The journalist adds that Gakpo would be an excellent signing for the club after making a rapid start to the season.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “This Arsenal squad needs to be kept on their toes. They're doing really well but you don't want them feeling too comfortable with any position and Gakpo has been absolute class this season. He would be a really good addition if they could get him.”

Do Arsenal need Gakpo?

Arteta is not short of attacking prowess in north London, with his side sitting at the top of the Premier League table with 23 goals to their name – a total only bettered by Manchester City.

New recruit Gabriel Jesus has made a fast start to life in red, scoring five times and laying on three assists in the top flight so far, while Gabriel Martinelli has also found the net on four occasions.

Bukayo Saka continues to impress as well, directly contributing to seven goals in nine appearances.

However, there remain a few question marks over the depth available at the Emirates, with Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah and Marquinhos the go-to reinforcements.

Gakpo only appears to be getting better at present and if Arsenal feel they have a shot at winning the race, they have to go for it.
