Everton cannot argue that winger Anthony Gordon is worth less than £100,000 a week, according to journalist Dean Jones.

After attracting interest from Chelsea during the summer, Jones thinks it will be "almost impossible" for the Merseyside club to get their prized asset to sign a new deal that would see him earn less than six figures.

What is the latest news involving Gordon?

The Sun recently claimed that Everton's contract talks with Gordon have stalled.

According to the outlet, the 21-year-old's camp want the Toffees to make a £100,000-a-week offer.

The above comes after Chelsea's pursuit of Gordon during the summer. The English youngster was a target for the west London club, who were unable to sign him in the end, and is currently thought to be on just £10,000 a week.

With the transfer window now closed, Everton are trying to get Gordon to extend his stay at Goodison Park. However, it looks like that is not going to be an easy task.

What has Jones said about Gordon and Everton?

Jones feels Everton and Gordon are at a stage now where the club have to offer him serious money if they want him to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: "Once you are linked with transfers upwards of £50m, it's almost impossible for your club to then argue that you are not worth at least £100,000 a week, no matter your age or your experience."

Does Gordon really deserve a £100,000-a-week contract?

It is debatable, to say the least. While Gordon started this season strongly, scoring a couple of goals in his first few Premier League games for Frank Lampard's side, he is still quite young.

The England U21 international also still has a lot of developing to do as an attacker after registering just four times in the previous campaign.

With all of that being said, had Gordon moved to a club like Chelsea during the summer, he could have easily picked up a wage packet of £100,000 a week or at least something close to that. Therefore, Everton are now in a situation where they may have to offer the player that kind of money in order to keep hold of him.

If he can get a big-money deal at Chelsea, a club who may also be able to offer him Champions League football next season, then why would he sign a contract that is worth much less at Everton? There are not too many reasons.

So while Gordon may not necessarily warrant a £100,000-a-week contract, he is probably in a position where he can demand one.
