Leeds United star Pascal Struijk is keen to sign a new contract at Elland Road and that is 'what the club needs right now', according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Whites may have spent close to £100million during the summer transfer window, but their attentions could turn towards tying one of their key men down to a long-term deal.

What's the latest news involving Struijk?

Struijk will enter the final 18 months of his £29,000-per-week agreement at the turn of the year, but it is clear that he wants to commit his future to Leeds and extend his stay in Yorkshire.

In an interview with Dutch media outlet Voetbalzone, the defender revealed 'it would be nice if they were willing to extend my contract'.

The report suggests Struijk, a former Netherlands under-17 international, is enjoying his time in the Premier League and fully focused on enjoying success with Leeds.

He last signed a new contract close to two years ago, but that deal is due to expire in the summer of 2024.

Struijk made the move to Leeds from Eredivisie giants Ajax in January 2018 and has progressed having initially linked up with the Whites' under-23 side.

What has Dean Jones said about Struijk?

Jones believes Struijk has built a positive rapport with the Leeds fanbase and has never let the club down with his performances.

As a result, the journalist feels the Whites should grant the versatile star his wish and put the offer of fresh terms on the table.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "Leeds fans have always liked the commitment he has shown. He's always been a very good performer.

"I think this is what the club needs right now - players who are committing to them."

Does Struijk deserve a new contract?

Although Struijk is currently on the sidelines with a minor injury, there is no doubt that he has given his all in a Leeds shirt.

He has chalked up 75 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit and also been key when options have been light, having appeared at left-back, centre-half and defensive midfield.

Struijk had played every minute of the Premier League season up until missing the trip to Leicester City on Thursday, emphasising his importance, and found the back of the net at Crystal Palace earlier this month.

The Dutchman has been a reliable figure for Jesse Marsch, who was appointed as Leeds' head coach in February, and should be rewarded with an improved contract.
