Patrick Mahomes’ first-ever points in the Super Bowl were certainly memorable ones, and when you go back and look at them, even better than you possibly remember.

Whilst there is no argument that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is the established ‘G.O.A.T’ of the National Football League with all that he has done for the game, there is some argument to be made that Patrick Mahomes could be the man to unseat him from that throne by the time his career is done.

Since arriving with the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2017 season he has managed to put up 24,108 passing yards and 194 touchdowns across both the regular and postseason, whilst also holding a rather remarkable accolade of being the only quarterback to be able to play four consecutive conference championship games at home in the Super Bowl era, which stands as a testament to how well he sets his team up in the regular season and executes in the postseason.

If he can add a couple of more Super Bowl rings to his collection by the time he retires, then he might be able to add himself into that discussion. And just like Tom Brady, he had to start his Super Bowl journey somewhere, and for Mahomes it was against the San Francisco 49ers

Patrick Mahomes meets the 49ers in a Super Bowl rematch

This Sunday sees the Chiefs and the 49ers meet for the first time since they played each other in South Florida in Super Bowl LIV in 2020, a day that Mahomes wasn’t exactly at his best. He threw two touchdowns and 286 yards, but also threw two interceptions that threatened to throw everything off.

But he also ran for a touchdown to give the Chiefs their first points of the game, and as we said in the introduction, it might not look like much, but when you give it a proper look, you realise just how clever the whole play was.

Mahomes leaves his man looking stupid

With the Chiefs down near the goalline Mahomes, usually dependant on his arms, showed that he can use his legs too as he ran an option play, looked like he was going to hand it off to his running back, before ducking inside and crossing the goalline, leaving Jaquiski Tartt flat-footed and bewildered in the process.

Talk about getting off on the right foot.
