Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth is open to a raid on his former club Brighton for Leandro Trossard, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Belgian winger has been linked with a move to St James' Park, and Jones says the Tyneside club signing him is something Ashworth would be "on board" with.

What is the latest news involving Trossard?

Graeme Bailey of 90min recently claimed that both Newcastle and Chelsea are interested in Trossard.

The 27-year-old is, of course, someone Blues boss Graham Potter knows well, with the Englishman managing him during his time at the Amex.

In regards to how much Trossard could cost, speaking on the Talking Transfers podcast, Bailey stated that an offer of around £25m may be enough to get the player out of Brighton in January.

Trossard has already hinted that he could leave Roberto De Zerbi's side in the near future, telling Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad that he wants to join Chelsea if the opportunity arises.

What has Jones said about Trossard to Newcastle?

While Chelsea seems to be Trossard's preference if he is allowed to leave Brighton, Jones is not ruling out Newcastle.

When asked if the Magpies are in the race to sign the Belgium international, the transfer insider told GIVEMESPORT: "Yeah, they are. He's someone that is definitely on the radar. Obviously, Dan Ashworth is the man that's going to need to be convinced over any signing, but I'm told that he is on board with this."

Would Trossard be a good signing for Newcastle?

Yes. The Brighton star has probably been one of the best attackers in the Premier League this season.

In 12 games, Trossard has scored seven goals, which includes a brilliant hat-trick against Liverpool.

As per FBref, the former Genk man has also ranked in the 81st percentile for touches in the penalty area among attacking midfielders and wingers over the last year, showing the kind of threat he would bring to Eddie Howe's side.

Speaking about Trossard after the 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, his manager said (via The Argus): "Trossard is a star, a very good player. When he was away with the national team, I sent him a message that he has to increase the number of goals."

Right now, Newcastle are flying, moving up to fourth place after their 2-1 defeat of Tottenham last weekend. If they can add a player of Trossard's quality to their squad in January, Howe's side could become even better.
