Southampton have been dealt a "huge blow" with the news that Kyle Walker-Peters is likely to be sidelined until after the World Cup, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The £23,000 per-week star sustained a hamstring injury in the victory at Bournemouth last week and is facing a long spell on the treatment table.

What's the latest news involving Walker-Peters?

Walker-Peters was enjoying another influential season at right-back for the Saints, starting each of their first 11 Premier League fixtures.

But the ex-Tottenham ace's run of consecutive starts came to an end against Arsenal on Sunday when he missed out following an injury picked up at the Vitality Stadium four days earlier.

Unfortunately for Southampton, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed the injury is a significant one, meaning the England international will be out "long term".

"The negative thing is that we have another big injury that costs us a player out for the long term in Kyle Walker-Peters," admitted the Austrian.

He added: "Hamstring injury. We will see how long (he is out). There is a lot of blood. If there is a tendon involved, we don't know it yet."

Southampton coped well in Walker-Peters' absence after Hasenhuttl's side continued their mini revival by holding Arsenal to a 1-1 draw on Sunday and extended their unbeaten run in the process.

What did Jones say about Walker-Peters?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "It's a huge blow for Southampton losing Kyle Walker-Peters, he's been probably their most consistent player in the last 12 months and he's so versatile as well.

"He can go right back and left back, and I think he's been a great avenue for them going forward, he's provided goals and scored goals."

What games could Walker-Peters miss?

It's difficult to tell exactly how long the right-back will be unavailable for, but he at least looks set to miss all of Saints' pre-World Cup fixtures.

That means he'll be forced to sit out the Premier League trips to Crystal Palace and Liverpool and home game against Newcastle.

Walker-Peters will also miss the Carabao Cup third round clash with Sheffield Wednesday, although as first choice right-back there's no guarantee he would have played anyway.

After the World Cup, Southampton return to action with a Boxing Day clash against Brighton, which is what Walker-Peters will surely be working towards over the next couple of months.
