Lionel Messi was at his brilliant best as Paris Saint-Germain smashed seven past Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday evening.

PSG went into the game knowing a win would see them qualify for the Champions League last 16.

And they got the result they desired as they won 7-2.

Messi (2), Kylian Mbappe (2), Neymar, Carlos Soler and Sean Goldberg (own-goal) were all on the scoresheet in PSG's convincing victory in France.

Messi has been outstanding this season and he produced another masterclass in front of his own fans at the Parc des Princes.

He opened the scoring in the 19th minute as he found the back of the net with a wonderful finish with the outside of his boot.

The 25-year-old scored his second just before half-time as he rifled the ball into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

He also recorded two assists. having created both Neymar and Soler's goals.

Messi failed to make the 30-man shortlist for the 2022 Ballon d'Or after a poor first campaign at PSG.

But he has rediscovered his form and is now back to his brilliant best.

Per Bleacher Report, he has become the first player in Europe's top five leagues to double-digit figures in goals (11) and assists (12) in all competitions this season. He has played just 16 matches.

Messi is close to beating his tally from last season, where he directly contributed to 26 goals (11 goals, 15 assists).

There's a long way to go but if Messi can keep up his form and win silverware, 2023 could well be the year that Messi wins his eighth Ballon d'Or trophy.
